What to do about the flu.

The flu…is here.

So much to do about the flu! I am often asked about the “immunization”; should I do it? Well I am not your personal medical professional so I won’t make a blanket statement about what you should do about the flu shot. I will tell you that when you are healthy, and your immune system is strong, even if you get a dose of the flu, you will quickly recover. The flu does not stay around in healthy environments.

Let’s ask a better question: What can I do to reduce my chances of getting the flu? Well, not rocket science here, but this is my quick daily recommendations:

Wash your hands every time you go out and at a minimum of three times a day.

Take nutritional supplements. Whole food based. No matter how healthy you eat, you won’t get enough healthy enzymes, minerals and vitamins from the foods you eat.

Sleep more. Even if it is just another 10 or 15 minutes. Sleep does help the body recover from the day, the stress, and all the other things we do.

Drink more water. It cleanses the body.

Finally, stop reading about it...it only makes the situation seem worse :)

Sin taxes!

When I first heard about the idea of a sin tax on sodas, I thought it was a great idea.  But where would it end? After reading the Washington Post's article 5 Myth's about Soda Tax (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/09/25/AR2009092502015.html) I began to see the problem.  And just who decides what is healthy or not? Clearly the food companies would have a fit, and would further confuse the already confusing notion that "all natural" means healthy.

And will a tax really change behavior? NO...look at the cost of cigarettes which have increased a gazillion percent over 10 years. This is not what causes people to quit.

Get to the root of the issue of behavior change: save money by NOT losing work days, feel better,  live with less dependancy on our hyped up medical/sick care! Go ahead, drink that soda...but just remember, that is rips calcium from your body, decays your teeth, adds uncessacary calories, and dehydrates you (aka: ages you!).  Oh, sugar free is WORSE for you. Just stop drinking it...no matter what the price is!

Music

I am now the proud owner of a squeezebox! a new technology (new to me) that picks up the radio stations, your computer saved play list, and even your subscriptions to your music sites and plays them in any room in your house.

Listening to music has been proven to help ease stress, and can create an atmosphere for your friends and family to relax, or dance! So if you have not been listening to your music collection lately, find a way to get back to it! It lifts the heart, the spirit and thus the immune system!

Coaching the Unemployed

Tagged in: Untagged

Last week I had the blessing to do a workshop at a local church to a room full of unemployed people. The subject was "keeping healthy while unemployed", but I titled it Enjoying Unemployment. Being unemployed (I have been there a few times myself!) is a unique time in your life and can cause a great deal of stress. Most of the stress is in our head. We repeat negative messages over and over again.

The lesson was on interupting the negative messages and inserting a new message, one that causes you to shift your perspecitve.

What negative message do you have running around in your head? What can you insert to intertupt it? Stumped? Call me and let's see what we can do in 10 minutes on the phone! 703-450-6114
