As women, we like and need support. And when it come’s to our health, we do well by sharing the experience and doing this in groups. You can create your own group or join a group…just consider some simple things:
Focus on the common subect of interest. This brings like minded women together.
Don’t analyze the “who” in the group….when we come together around a common interest, we find our connections regardless of backgrounds.
Do consider the time commitment and make attendance to your “circle” a priority; the group wants you there each time.
Meet in a comfortable, safe place that includes music, soft surroundings, and tissues.
You are welcome to consider our Women’s Wellness Circle starting January 28th. Contact freddi@forhealthandbalance.com for details.

This weekend I had the pleasure (and the time!) to read two small but meaningful books: The Dip and The Gap. These books are by two different authors at two different times…they just happen to enter my life at the same time. The dip is all about knowing when to quit and when to stick it out. The Gap is about the skill of building lifetime happiness (and yes, this IS a skill to be learned). Oddly enough, they both center on a common theme….when you get to the middle of something. Do you look forward to see how far you have to go, or do you look back to see how far you have come? This is the difference between the dip and the gap…
Looking back to see how far you have come can create great joy. And when it comes to investing in your health, this is very important. The Gap is the distance between where you are and your ideal. You may not be at your ideal when you look back…and most likely you will not get there (that is why it is called “ideal”). How we view this gap, though, is where the power is…in your mind. Does the gap create motivation or does it create stress? If it creates stress, focus on where you came FROM. If it creates motivation, go ahead and focus on the ideal, where you want to get TO.
The dip is the inevitable part of every journey: the middle. When it comes to your health, hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent getting to the middle…and then you get {bored, frustrated, tired, lonely, broke, sad, etc} Should I quit, or keep going? (the manufacturers of whatever health club or diet you signed up for are counting on you quitting). “Quitting the projects that don’t go anywhere is essential if you want to stick to the right ones”, say Godin. Your health is ALWAYS a right one….so quitting should only be an option if you picked a program that is not working for you. When it comes to your health you want to find a way to get through the dip, the time when you feel like giving up. Change up programs, trainers, equipment, food choices. Add massage, new clothing, new shoes, new music, new dishes. Get rid of old messages, ratty clothing, dead beat friends who don’t support you. When you get to the dip regarding improving your health, stay or play…with new ideas, but don’t quit entirely. The reward is bigger than you imagine.
Whether you are in the dip or in the gap, remember that it is your mind that has the power to change your life for the better. Want to change your mind? Call me…I can help you do this. J
Just back from the Wellness Conference in Wisconsin. What an amazing event! The speakers, the inspiration , the support was amazing. Over 400 people attended most of the week and we are all dedicated to making our population well.
One of the most significant lessons was the emphasis on MOVEMENT vs. Exercise. Exercise is something one “should” do, whereas movement the way we did it (hoola hoops, line dancing, EXOTIC dancing, NIA, walking) was all pure joy and fun. So instead of saying I have to go to the gym, consider the statement, “I gotta MOVE” and shake your bootie for 30 minutes! It all counts.
| The next time you pick up a Twinkie, consider this: out of the laundry list of often unpronounceable ingredients, eight come from domestic corn, three from soybeans and others from Chinese refineries and Chinese factories. More specifically, some of the ingredients, such as thiamine mononitrate, come from Chinese petroleum.Disturbing? Yes. But perhaps even more so is the fact that the LA Times author of this article said Twinkies contain “other unexpected ingredients that are much harder to trace.” Ingredients coming from American food additive “manufacturers” who buy their chemicals from distributors without asking where they came from. The distributors are guilty, too, because they buy from importers, who buy from exporters, who also do not identify their real sources.Of course, Twinkies are not the only food (if you can call them that) on your grocery store shelves that contain a sampling of strange chemicals from around the world. Most all processed foods, from salad dressings to frozen dinners, contain foreign additives. It took the recent tainted pet food calamity to bring to light the gross lack of oversight going on in this country and around the world when it comes to your food safety (not to mention nutrient content). But I doubt it has spurred much significant change.
You simply must look out for your own best interests when it comes to the food you choose to put in your body, which is why I’m a whole-hearted believer in buying your foods from local, community-supported agriculture programs. Fortunately, it’s the right season in the United States to take advantage of local farmer’s markets, and if you don’t know where to find one we’ve compiled some excellent resources to help you find locally grown vegetables in your area. |
In our world of multi-tasking, long work hours, Blackberrys, and other “productivity tools” we are failing to do the most critical job of all: take care of our own health. We say “we are too busy”, we don’t have time, we don’t have the money. If you have said this…please keep reading!Time…what is time really for? We only have so many hours on this earth, and we choose, over and over again, to give our time away to activities which do not support healthy lifestyles. In particular, we give it to the company we work for or to the TV. What exactly are you accomplishing by giving your time away to work and television? One answer is chronic illness. Every year, more than 7 out of 10 Americans die as a result of chronic diseases. By 2020, chronic conditions are expected to afflict 157 million people, half the
Did you know that the third leading cause of death is caused by doctors and hospitals? Mistakes, overdoses, under-doses, complications. One of my girlfriends was in the hospital last week. She was on an IV…and the nurse came in to change it. My friend noticed that there was no attempt to “clean” the area of the IV where the nurse was changing bags. The nurse was also not wearing gloves. She brought this to the attention of the nurse, and the nurse actually rolled her eyes and sighed as she left to get the proper equipment to do the job.
This is just a little sample of all the mistakes and oversights in today’s hospitals and medical practices. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to change this any time soon. More people are seeing doctors, so the doctors are getting busier, and the demand for nursing is way behind what the country needs. So the only real solution to avoid the third leading cause of death is to stay healthy.
Staying healthy may seem like a lot of work to some of you….all that exercise, cooking whole foods, meditating, getting massage, investing in water purifiers and the like. But now think of the “cost” and time associated with being sick. First, you can’t do what you want to do…too many doctors appointments (who keep you waiting for an hour or so). Time off from work, missed parties and celebrations, the cost of medications that make you feel goofy or nauseous. And the fact that you may actually die from the mistakes! That is a risk I do not want to take, how about you?
Take the time to care for the only body you have so you won’t have to rely on the busy doctors and the pharmaceutical drugs with side effects, and so you won’t have to experience the cost of “missing life”.
Be well, create wellth. J
Government researchers have just announced that Americans are far from consuming adequate amounts of fruits and vegetables which in turn increases their odds of acquiring heart disease, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s Disease as well as numerous other serious health conditions. These findings come from a health and eating habits survey conducted in 2005 of more than 300,000 Americans, called the 2005 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. According to the survey, less than one third of adults consumed at least five daily servings of fruits and vegetables - the government’s suggested daily consumption of fruits and vegetables in 2005. Now here is the BIG news….New government guidelines have now increased the suggested daily consumption to three to five servings of fruit and four to eight servings of vegetables daily.
OK…add it up! That is 7 – 13 servings per day. This means you should be eating a fruit or a vegetable about every hour you are working. Now seeing that a serving is about a cup, you could combine two or three veggies together…and make this one large serving. The key is get started….and plan for this. Buy, wash, cut and store your fruits and veggies at regular intervals during the week. Or go to one of the fancy food stores that do this for you! Just start! Most importantly, you will not truly know if you are getting all of your fruits and veggies in a day until you write it down…the mind plays tricks on us J So try the Pyramid Tracker and notice what happens. Even for one day. Because every little bit of change adds up!
The highest form of satisfaction in the work we do here at For Health and Balance is measured when a client tells us we have changed his life, for the better, for ever! And that is the case with “Mark”…I just got off the phone with him. He has been in the 4 Health Program for 90 days. This means he is getting coaching, personal training, nutrtion counseling, and massage and refelxology (which he has never heard of) almost weekly.
He has lost 10 pounds, dropped a few of his medications (he is a diabetic), has feeling in his legs for the first time in years (neuropathy), shops for his foods differently, pays attention to everything he eats, ENJOYS his workouts, and can now manage his previous addiction to the sugar/coffee combination.
We want to tell his story becasue so many people are in the same place “Mark” was just 90 days ago. He said the program is “pretty amazing…it is a life changing experience”. We want the world to know “Mark’s” story, because this is what we do: we CAUSE you to FEEL GOOD in the only body you have.
What a great job we have :)
If you want to hear more of his story, give me a call: I will connect you with him.
